Velda Nelson Hatton

VELDA NELSON HATTON, Mangum. I am retired after 20 years as a Social Worker for the Department of Human Services and seven years as News and Society Editor at the Mangum Star where I worked with my husband, Lowell, who was Publisher, Editor and co-owner of the Mangum Star. Lowell died in August, 1988. He spent 30 years with the Mangum Star as advertising manager, sports writer and for the last 15 years Co-owner.

My family consists of a daughter, Vicki, who is a professor in the Physical Education Department at South Western Oklahoma State University, Weatherford. She received her doctorate in 1996 from OSU. Marc, my son, is High School and Junior High Principal and boy's basketball coach at Garber Schools, his wife, Dawna, is a pharmacist in Enid and my grandson, Kirk, is a busy 14 year old seventh grader who participates in baseball, football, basketball, band and is a honor student in Garber schools. He keeps his grandmother young and on her toes. I attend as many of his activities as possible.

My hobbies are reading, sewing and painting (mostly water-colors). I enjoy traveling especially to see my children. I have enjoyed organizing this year's 50 alumni anniversary for the Class of '48 with the assistance of LaVern Lanford, and I am look forward to seeing everyone.
