LaCASA MONUMENT DEDICATION
update
Rain, Rain, Sweet Rain on Saturday did not deter the crowd of about 50 people who gathered for the LaCasa Monument Dedication.
The Monument was ready to be unveiled largely thru the efforts of Mary Beth Williams who had asked the question "Why doesn't LaCasa School have a Monument?"
and (at times) lived to regret it! She and her committee, Dottie Prock, Wanda Carry, Don Cary and others worked with the Oklahoma Historical Society, the Oklahoma Dept of Transportation, the LaCasa School Alumni and managed to complete this project in a little over one year! Excellent Job! Thanks, Mary Beth!

WELCOME to the LACASA ALUMNI BANQUET April 19, 2003
Hosted by the CARY FAMILY and Honoring the Class of '53
PERFECT ATTENDANCE...All of the Class of 1953 were in attendance....including sponsors....
FOR the 2003 LaCasa Reunion
NOLAN CUMMINS~SHIRLEY LEWIS~GLENNETH McGEE~
INETHA ROLLINS~MICKEY TRAMMELL~PEGGY TRAMMELL
Superintendent of Schools and Class Sponsor MR. BOB COPELAND
and Principal MR. BOB NAYLOR
The Western Theme was a big hit! Don Cary wore the biggest HAT!
All the little Cowboys and Cowgirls had a great time!
On Friday from 4 pm on the crowd gathered at the PSO Room next to Pioneer Telephone for cookies and conversation.
The room was full and noisy with laughter, hugs and TALL TALES!
On Saturday morning the crowd gathered again at the Elementary School Cafeteria,
for lunch prepared and served by our own local LaCasa Cowboy, Kent Rollins~Cowboy Cook!
The tables were decorated with beautiful Cowboy items and we even had a saddle or two in the room. Kent took time to tell a few tales after a huge meal of Bar-B-Q Beef, beans, potatoe salad, peach cobbler, fresh hot rolls and Camp Coffee!
We hurt when we laughed! No senior portions served here!
Don Cary, our MC, "Welcomed" the LaCasa Students back to Hollis!
Ralph Lewis and Grant Bible offered our prayers of thankfulness for the fellowship, food and friends!
Lucille Bible left the room and in came "Minnie Pearl" to tell us all about the "goin's on's" in Grinder Switch!
Wanda Cary led us in the School Song!
Harlon Cary read the list of names of the ones we have lost over the past year, eleven people were on that list.
They will be missed!
An invitation was made to visit the Harmon County Historical Museum where items from the LaCasa School are housed. Inetha Rollins donated her LaCasa School letter jacket to the Museum to hang beside the yellow girls basketball uniform that many of the girls remembered wearing!
Wow! It is short!
Everyone had a wonderful time, there were several who had not attended for a while and several who were not able to attend this year!
LaCasa Reunion 2004 - 2005 years will be hosted by the Coaly Family.....their theme...."THE 50's" so get out your blue suede shoes and your poodle skirts! And let us know the names and addresses of the people you would most like to see attend! We will contact them!
Thanks again to the CARY FAMILY, for the western decorations, the programs, the excellent food and for gathering so many people to visit with, share photos and catch up on the News!
This was a beautiful day in Hollis for the 2003 LaCasa Reunion!

Mary Beth Williams and Bob Copeland April 18, 2003
MIXER at POE BUILDING, Hollis, OK
Don Cary greeted the guests, and while having Coffee and Donuts, reminded us of the 3l 1/2 year history of the LaCasa school,
from 1925 to 1957 and introduced one of the former Superintendents,
Mr Bob Copeland!
Bob Copeland shared SOME of his LaCasa memories with the group! When he became Superintendent.... his duties also included being a full time Teacher, Counselor, Custodian, Cafeteria Manager, Payroll and School Board Clerk, drama and sports Coach and FRIEND to all! Any one of these duties would have overwhelmed a lesser MAN! He did them all, WELL!
When Mr Copeland begain service at LaCasa there were only 6 teachers for 12 grades and a budget of $21,000. The school was heated with a Pot Bellied wood burning stove and the teachers lounge was the stroll up the field to boys outhouse! It was not easy... but LaCasa is where God placed him and he feels strongly that this was the job he was "Suppose to Be" doing!
Mr Copeland's theory was a school... UNDER GOD... based on strong moral values. Something hard to come by these days! But, I did overhear talk about recalling when the boys "liberated some watermelons"!
Mr Copeland AKA "Arron Slick from Pumpkin' Crick" also remembered fondly some of the many nicknames of the LaCasa School students, the longest "Sally Magusalama Ibblestein"! Some of these nicknames are their names to this day, such as Mr Cain's son SAP and Cotton and Bibbles. Some some are just memories.... There were Fats, Runt, Spur, Toddy, Popeye, Fuzzy, Doodlebug and Beatle Bug, Catfish, Duce, and don't forget the brothers Cowboy and Calfboy!
Many remembered the schools rock fence being covered with food on special days! And the parents and friends that brought and shared it!
In all, a good a crowd for only having had about 275 gradudates in all the years of service of the LaCasa School! All of those students have made quite a ripple...... you might even call it a Wave!
Oh Yes! The songs were led by a new generation of CARY's and I noticed a great improvement since the Reunion, could we have been practicing singing the LaCasa songs?

LaCASA MONUMENT DEDICATION
The LaCasa Monument Dedication will be held Saturday, July 6, 2002 10:00 A. M.
at the monument site located 3 miles east of Hollis on Highway 62
This site location is next to the old silver barn see photo below, 5 miles north of the LaCasa School location. The Monument will be similar to the site that Ron School has constructed north of Hollis on Highway 30. The dedication will include a group of "descendants" singing two LaCasa songs and speeches by
Mary Beth Williams, Chairperson of the Monument Committee and Bob Copeland, past principal and superintendent of LaCasa.
The program should last about 30 minutes.
The PSO Building, now the Pioneer Telephone Co office, on main street in Hollis will be open from 8:00 am till noon with coffee and donuts. Come by before and after the dedication ceremony.
This is a once in a lifetime occasion to help honor a wonderful school, to remember the good times and what LaCasa means to so many families. Our thanks go out to the Monument Committee Chairman and the other committee members Dottie Prock and Wanda Beth Cary.
See you there!

"2002" LACASA SCHOOL REUNION
The 71st LaCasa School Reunion "A Great Success" There were over 40 students in attendance at the 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm Mixer on Friday evening March 29, 2002! Everyone was talking at once! In the background the LaCasa School Video was playing and you could hear the squeals when someone was recognized. The Cary family provided cookie, coffee and tea!
By 10:00 am on Saturday morning the Cafeteria was busy! The patriotic decorations were inspiring, the RED,WHITE & BLUE flags flying, with flowers and sparkles galore! They remind us of how proud we are of this wonderful Country, USA forever!
There were about 85 guests for Lunch around the Red River Ranch....Chuck Wagon! We had warm... home (...in a wagon) cooked biscuits, ham or beef, slow cooked brown beans and potatoe salad..... and a luscious peach cobbler that would take anyone off their diet! Kent Rollins not only cooked a wonderful meal he gave a hilarious presentation of Cowboy Poetry that left us laughing and crying!
Our Host Don Cary introduced the group of Cary's that worked so hard to see that we all had a wonderful time! Don's eloquent voice would hold anyones attention as we saw on the LaCasa Videos! A Reunion this nice is not brought about without the work and cooperation of lots of people! Thank you Cary's!
Special Guest....Lee Greenwood sang "GOD BLESS THE USA" accompanied by a pretty sad bunch of backup singers! But the spirit was definitely there even if the voices were a little weak! We also sang "LaCasa", the backup singers need a lot more practice on this one!
see words below! Not recommended for viewer born after 1942!
Joe Don Gideon won the PRIZE for traveling the most miles to share his smile! He came over 400 miles from his home in Albuquerque, New Mexico!
Remember to Contact Donna Cary with your address changes! The Cary Family will also Host the 2003 Reunion.... but, be thinking about YOUR contribution for 2004 & 2005 events! See you next year!
LA CASA SCHOOL began with the consolidation of Mesquite, Bearden and Star Valley in 1925. And closed 1957 with student transfers to Hollis High School. The first graduation was in the spring of 1928 with one graduate, student Pearl Walkup! Many of the LaCasa School students including the Coaly Kids can be seen on the fantastic Videos by
DON CARY & DONNA CARYSee the students of LaCasa Schools on 3 videos. They did an outstanding job and we have spent hours looking at the films! Hope you will get your copies! Delbert remembers fondly his days at LaCasa School, his Daddy James Elbert "Ebb" Coaly would bring homeOrange Slices candy and he loved eating his Mothers wonderful cream pies!
Delbert is always telling me about the wonderful GIRLS OF LA CASA! Winnona Davidson Farmer E-mailed to verify that he LOVED the girls! Earl and Mary Lou Nelson, Duncan, Oklahoma sent me this " evidence" photo! Delbert could name all the GIRLS, can you? jpc |
