The poorer girls had to work to help pay for thier board, Daisy was one of the B.H.S. Pealers (she isn't pictured), she was the fastest potato pealer I've ever seen. At family dinners into her 80's, when she came in the kitchen and asked what she could do, my mother would have her peal the potatoes. She would reach into her purse and pull out her sharp knife, she carried it to cut packages open, she could never understand why "they" have to seal them up so tight. When I asked her if she carried the knife for protection she would say " Naw, if any man grabs me, when he gets me out into the light and sees what he's got, he'll throw me back".
