Fleischmanns reunion draws 175
An estimated 175 people attended the Fleischmanns High School Reunion June 17, when alumni from far away and near renewed acquaintances with old friends and classmates.
Four alumni - John Fuller, Lolly Marsh Irby, Herbert Jensen and Ellen Bryant Staiger and their spouses travelled from California.
Others came from Delaware; Connecticut, New Jersey, North and South Carolina, Tennessee and Florida.
Lyndon Kelly of Margaretville was the sole representative of the earliest class attending, the Class of 1935.
Those from the Class of 1940, celebrating their 55th reunion, included. Jean Kelly Wells, Dorothea Herdman Gasperini, Earl Johnson and Ralph Myers.
Catherine Smith Greenberg and Helen Mech Miller attended from the Class of 1945 to mark their 50th reunion.
From the Class of 1950 were eight alumni: Daniel Donahue, Francis Osterhoudt, Ellen Bryant Staiger, Lois Maben Umhay, Nancy Rosa Vermilyea, Lynn Vermilyea, Frieda Simmons Sprague and Herman Wadler.
Marking their 50th anniversary a year early, since there will be no reunion next year, were Class of 1946 members Eva Rockwell Fuller, Paul Herdman, Eleanor Gossoo LeBeau and Stella Mech Kelly.
Guest speaker for the festivities was William G. Miller of Highland, former princpal and teacher.
Master of ceremonies was John Todd of North Carolina, who welcomed former teachers Maude Finch, Shirley Wadler and Sam Whiting, and former coach Al Nelson.
Also attending were June Valk, school secretary from 1958 to 1983, and Ruth Kelder, former cafeteria helper.
The barbecue on school grounds was followed by dancing to the mu-sic of the Mustangs.
Appreciation was extended to Pete and Nancy Ballard, owners of the former school, for hosting the event and helping with mailings and preparation; to Junior and Elaine Pultz for arranging the program and handling reservations; and to the Arkville, Fleischmanns and Pine Hill Fire Departments, and the Fleischmanns Methodist Church, for loaning tables and chairs.
Chucky Fronckowiak, Dick Cable and Frank Osterhoudt were also thanked for helping to set up the grounds
