NETWORK WEBMASTER MARK WEDDELL
SUCCUMBS TO HEART ATTACK
By Ron & Dale, Chair Couple
On Saturday, September 28, 2002 Mark Weddell died suddenly and unexpectedly in
Sweetwater, Tennessee where Mark and Sling were on the first day of a vacation
trip to Toledo to visit Sling’s brother and family.
They had stopped in Sweetwater, after driving all night from St. Petersburg, to
visit the caverns and underground lake tourist attraction there. Mark
experienced a couple of episodes of shortness
of breath but dismissed them as nothing serious. On the way to the car to go to
lunch, Mark collapsed and died. It happened very quickly. Paramedics were not
able to revive him. Mark is survived by his partner Sling Pitts, and by three
sisters and their husbands and children. He was only 46 years of age.
Remembering Mark
We are deeply saddened by the loss of a personal friend, and also reeling from
the loss of talent that he shared with Florida Gulf Coast COUPLES and with the
COUPLES National Network. The work he did for us will be taken up by others, but
nothing will ever replace his warm, friendly spirit, his constant desire to give
and share, and his exceptional commitment to the “COUPLES Concept” and all of
the activities of the local group and the Network. We were among the very first
to receive word of his sudden death - a phone message from Sling when we arrived
home from a Saturday dinner. We were totally stunned, and overwhelmed with
feelings. We pondered what to do – feeling pretty helpless to do much to help at
that point. We got on the phone to an FGCC coffee talk event that was going on,
to let some of the other members of the local group know as soon as possible. We
also emailed the members of the Network Operating Board, and later made
arrangements for the Network Member Services Couple to get the word out to all
of the Affiliates.
Mark and Sling were known and loved by many - they attended almost all of the
local FGCC events (rarely ever missed a dine-out), and also had attended the
Network celebrations in San Antonio, St. Pete Beach, San Diego, and Ft.
Lauderdale.
Mark and Sling were exceptionally devoted to the couples group. Shortly after
FGCC was founded, we had an information table at the Tampa Pride festival -
which that year was located in a large downtown dance club. That’s where Mark
and Sling first talked to us. They were excited to find such a group and soon
joined and became active. At the first election meeting a few months later, they
were elected to be the Media Couple, taking over the monthly newsletter from us
and making it into a much more professional looking publication.
They continued to serve on the Board of FGCC, developed a local web site for the
group, and were elected Web Services Couple when the group split that position
off from the Media Couple’s responsibilities. They also later served as Web
Service Couple for the Network, taking over from Lisa and Mary K. In addition to
the responsibilities of their board positions, they volunteered frequently to
help with activities like beach parties and the after-pride get acquainted
picnics. At one time Mark had worked in his family’s candy store, and every year
conducted a candy making class for the local group just before the holidays.
They hosted many other events in their home as well - they purposely moved from
a small town home to a very spacious house primarily so that they would be able
to accommodate couples activities. Mark especially loved games like Trivial
Pursuit - he had an exceptional knowledge of trivia - he was easily going to be
everyone’s first “phone a friend” if we ever got to be contestants on
Millionaire.
In the last year or so, Mark’s job had gotten more complicated and stressful. He
was webmaster and computer guru for four related companies, and was required to
travel quite a bit. Many of his work days were very long. And then on top of
that, he still kept up with web projects and other commitments for COUPLES (he
was quick to volunteer and had no idea how to say “no”). And he served as a
personal computer guru problem solver for many of us, in his “spare” time. You
could always tell that there were many things going on in his head at the same
time. He was a classic “Type A” workaholic, although he did manage to find some
time to kick back and relax (at least by external indications). He and Sling
loved their house, which backed up to a bunch of trees and then a golf course,
and was very quiet and private. Just before Mark and Sling left on the fateful
vacation trip, we told them that we hoped that Mark would be able to truly
unwind and slow down and leave a lot of the chaos behind. It is sadly ironic
that, after driving all night from St. Pete to Tennessee, that Mark was taken
from us before he ever had a chance to kick back and truly relax.
Mark and Sling had been together for 19 years. They met just two weeks after
Sling “came out.” Sling’s entire gay life was with Mark. They were very close,
and visibly very much in love. Mark’s death has been devastating to Sling - he
continues to say “I still can’t believe that he is really gone.” It will be a
long and difficult adjustment for Sling. Fortunately, the local FGCC group is
very supportive and caring - Sling will not be alone in his struggle.
Meanwhile, Mark has probably already been recruited by the cyber angels to help
advise the Almighty on what to do to cope with Bill Gates and the evil Microsoft
monster. Rest in peace, sweetie, you will always be part of our lives and of
everything that is COUPLES.
