11/15/09 Donald Barr, Social Studies teacher and Junior High Dean of Boys died on January 24, 2008 in Ithaca NY.  See www.starbeacon.com/obituaries/local_story_040194506.html  for a fine obituary with a photo at the Ashtabula OH  Feb 10 Star-Beacon newspaper.  The "Cornell Chronicle Online" at www.news.cornell.edu/stories/Jan08/Obit.Barr.sl.html also has his obituary.  The following is an excerpt:

Donald J. Barr, professor emeritus of policy analysis and management in the College of Human Ecology and a longtime social activist who spoke for disenfranchised members of the Ithaca and worldwide communities, died Jan. 24 in Ithaca, due to complications following a stroke.  A member of the Cornell faculty since 1971, Barr focused many of his professional and personal activities on fighting bias, prejudice and oppression and on issues related to leadership, empowerment and transforming power oppression. For many years he co-taught a popular Cornell course, Racism in American Society, and inspired many students to choose careers to pursue social change and justice.  "Professor Barr was much sought after by Human Ecology students of color, and others, for advice and support as they contemplated public service careers," said Jerome Ziegler, former dean of the College of Human Ecology.

Born May 7, 1935, in Geneva, Ohio, Barr earned a B.S. (1957) in social and earth sciences at Miami University in Ohio, an M.A. (1959) in sociology and a Ph.D. (1964) in guidance and counseling, both at Indiana University. Before teaching at Cornell, he taught at the University of Michigan and in elementary, middle and secondary public schools in Ohio and Indiana. He led numerous workshops and educational programs for such programs as the Telluride Summer Program, National Teacher Corps, National Training Laboratories, Summer Institute for the University of Victoria, UNICEF, Early Childhood Program Development and the National Executive Service Corps in New York City.

5/20/07 My apologies!  I just found this misfiled in  my email!  It was sent in Feb 2006 as a registration on the website.  We did not even have Patricia Miller Fraze's ('66-69) NAME in our file much less an address!  If she was YOUR math teacher - please email her! -- Margaret, webmaster  She wrote:

"
I treasure memories of working with many people and at one of the most special schools ever: IU methods class with Jerry McIntosh (fall, 1964) and subsequent work in his summer H.S. workshops; student teaching with the finest teacher --Bob Wilcutt (spring, 1965)-- who eventually introduced me to Houghton Mifflin for whom we developed a textbook; and especially teaching mathematics at U. School 1966-1969 -- first 7/8 grades and then H.S.  Devoted and inspiring colleagues, wonderful students (including the younger brother of my H.S. physics teacher! - the Crest family) and a colleagial and supportive environment that encouraged professionalism and creativity.

Taught in Ann Arbor for next 18 years that included birth of our son, Brian, serving as Dept. Chair for 14 years, receiving the first MI Presidential Award, completing an MBA at MI in the evening, and participating in another textbook project.  We moved to Princeton, from which I commuted to NYC for 12 years, then telecommuting for the next 6, last year moving to Bucks County, PA.  Joined investment advisory firm Westwood Holdings Group (WHG/NYSE) 16 years ago, serving first as portfolio manager and now as Client Services Manager.  Mathematics Teaching is incredibly relevant to work with clients and with colleagues.  --  My best to all"

DAVID LLOYD MAISH, 76 Ex-teacher strived to make history vivid
[Chicago Tribune - Final Edition] - Joan Giangrasse Kates - December 30, 2004 - (Copyright 2004 by the Chicago Tribune)

During a teaching career that spanned four decades, David Lloyd Maish not only encouraged his students to learn about history but to understand its relevance in today's world.
"Teaching to him was more about being engaging, not just spewing facts," said his daughter Peg. "He drew things out of his students and helped them connect the dots. He didn't teach them what to think, but rather how to think."

Mr. Maish, 76, of North Riverside, formerly of Countryside, an Army veteran and retired social studies teacher at Lyons Township High School in La Grange, died of leukemia Thursday, Dec. 23, in Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood. Born in Frankfort, Ind., Mr. Maish spent his early childhood in Ft. Wayne, where he lived in his family's apartment above a grocery store, which they owned and operated. When he was 14, his father died in a fire when the furnace in the store exploded one night. He later lived with his mother and sister in Bloomington before enlisting in the Army.  From 1946 to 1947, Mr. Maish served with the Army in Germany, where family members said he was commissioned a junior officer at age 19. He later headed a mounted cavalry unit, a peacekeeping force charged with stabilizing the border between Italy and Yugoslavia.
"He shared many stories about his Army days, along with dozens of photos of him and his trusty steed, Willy," said his daughter.

After his military discharge, Mr. Maish returned to Bloomington, where he received a bachelor's degree in journalism and a master's degree in education from Indiana University. It was during that time he met his wife, Carolyn, to whom he was married for 42 years before she died in 1999.  After teaching in Bloomington and Rochester, Minn., Mr. Maish moved with his family to Countryside in 1960 and joined the faculty at Lyons Township High School in La Grange. There he taught social studies and history for the next 28 years, also serving as the president of the Lyons Township High School faculty association before retiring in 1988.  "I had a lot of good teachers in high school, but Mr. Maish was my favorite," said Bill Derrah, a 1977 graduate of Lyons Township High School, who hopes to pursue a teaching career in the spring. "He taught me how to think like a historian, as opposed to saying 'here's the story, facts and dates, now go memorize it.'"

Family members said a key highlight of Mr. Maish's career was being chosen to serve as a reader for the national Advanced Placement tests in history, which are taken by high school seniors seeking college course credit. He also taught for a summer in Agana, Guam, as part of a teaching exchange program in 1970.  Other survivors include a son, Phillip; a daughter, Julia; a sister, Leanna Riggins; and a grandchild.

A memorial service will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Jan. 8 in Lyons Township High School, Brainard and Cossitt Avenues, La Grange.
9/30/05 Earl C. Floyd Jr., 83, of Bloomington, died Wednesday, Sept 28, 2005. He was professor emeritus of the IU School of Education and taught Art at University High School from 1955-1960. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Survivors include his wife, Marjorie; one daughter; one son; two brothers; one sister; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday October 1 at Allen Funeral Home. Burial will be at Clear Creek Cemetery. Friends may call 5-7:30 p.m. Friday (Sep 30) and one hour prior to services Saturday at the funeral home.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson's Foundation or Sherwood Oaks Christian Church in care of the funeral home.

9/6/05 Harlan A Booher, 75, of Bloomington, died September 2, 2005 in Bloomington.  He is survived by his partner of 45 years, Jack E. Davis. Harlan was the Democrat Registrar of the Monroe County Voter Registration Office from 1991 until his death.  He taught junior high school English at Bloomington's University School from 1962 through 1966, and he was a middle school teacher in Queensland, Australia, where he also was employed by the Queensland Highway Department from 1968-1971.  Harlan graduated from Howe Military School in Howe, Indiana, in 1948. He served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1953. He attended Harvard University and the University of Arizona before earning a bachelor's degree at Indiana University at Bloomington.

Harlan Booher was an unassuming Renaissance man. An enthusiastic student of places, peoples, and customs, he traveled overseas numerous times; and he lived in Spain and Australia as well as in California, Arizona, and Indiana.  He was an avid reader, who never tired of learning about the arts and social issues. He was an active member of the Monroe County Democratic Party and belonged to the Monroe County Democratic Women's Club. He admired most politicians.  At Harvard he was a member of the Hasty Pudding Club, and he was active in the Tucson Playbox Theater and the original Bloomington Town Theater. Jerry and Jane McIntosh of Bloomington will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Saturday at the Little Britt Inn in Britt, Ontario, Canada. The couple will celebrate at a later date in Bloomington with a dinner party at Chapman's restaurant hosted by their daughter.  She is the former Jane Pennell. She is retired from academic advising in the Indiana University Division and the department of applied health science.  He is associate professor emeritus in the IU School of Education, where he taught for 35 years. He also taught from 1958 to 1963 at University High School. He retired in 1998 with 40 years of service in the field of education.  Their children are Kevin McIntosh of Morgantown and Erin McIntosh of Fishers.  They have two grandchildren.

How we met
Jane sat behind Jerry in an educational psychology class at IU. Jerry's friend, and another member of the diving team, Ed Koeneman, gave his approval so they began dating. Jane's parents said that their marriage wouldn't last - but they proved her parent's wrong.

8/15/05 Becky Bobilya Gregory, who is receiving reservations for the upcoming October 29 reunion sends this:  -  Subject: Surprise Reunion Response

"I just got a phone call from Princeton, NJ, from Monica Chen Yu. She was a graduate student at IU and taught Chinese at UHS one year, 1963-64. She has no idea how we traced her but she is indeed delighted. She will not be able to attend the reunion, because she and her husband have to be in D.C. all Fall for something special he is doing.

However, she has kept all these years a newspaper clipping from May 10, 1963, with a picture of her, John Ray, other administrators, and several students, including Lynn Householder, Jan Thurston, Bill Burhans, et al. She is making a copy of this clipping and sending it to me. She would like for me to give copies to any of her students who might be interested.

It is her understanding that teaching Chinese in a midwestern high school in the early 60's was unique, and that she was a pioneer in the field. She had to walk from the IU campus to 10th & Bypass to teach the Chinese class, and she was not very involved with UHS faculty, staff, or student life other than her class.

It was such fun to share in her pleasure at being included in our All School reunion mailing!!!!

Becky

Fritzi Strudell's ('43) grand niece emailed to say:  "Fritzie is my great aunt, my great grandfather's sister. She received her bachelor's degree in education in 1941. I'm not sure if she furthered her education until 1943? Aunt Fritzie passed away on March 5, 1979 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  Not sure how accurate this information is but 'the family' story is that she went on to become director of nursing at Milwaukee General Hospital and helped write the nursing manual for the hospital."

This list has grown considerably because of lists from Commencement Programs from '52, '57, '63, and '67.  Also, I have seen the Jordannus for most years.  I visited the Indiana Room of the Bloomington Public Library to get information from the  yearbooks in their collection.  They have almost all of them. If you have a commencement program you can scan for me (or let me borrow to scan), please let me know.  --- Margaret

Dave Campaigne writes: "I just got word from my sister, Claudia class of '63, that Jo Spear is in the cardiac rehab area of the Bloomington Hospital for a couple of weeks following heart surgery.  Someone in Bloomington can probably provide the address if anyone would like to send a card.  I'm sure she's still too tough to let anything like this slow her down for long."
Becky Bobilya Gregory has the hospital address and may have other information.

Greg Temple ('59) contacted Robert Michael - and reports:

Dear Fellow-Pigs:

Thanks to help from web-wizard and buddy Dave Campaigne (U-School '60), I was able to trace and talk on the phone at length with Dr. Robert E. ( "Mr. Michael" ) Michael.  Robert, a 4-time grandfather in semi-retirement, is well and -- as ever -- stirring stuff in Manchester, NH. He remembers his three years (1957-1959) in U-School's English department both well and fondly.

Overcoming some initial jitters, born of hero-worship, I rattled off to him the names of a half-dozen or so U-School peers. After nearly 35 years, "Mr. Michael" remembered each personally, warmly and in detail.  And then he named another half dozen, with specific recollection and inquiry about the progress of each.  As I recounted what I knew about each of you, Robert reacted out of what was obviously deep affection. He recalled our times together at U-School as "among the best of my life," and he, like the rest of us, has endured quite some times since.

I asked him if I could share his addresses with you, and he responded instantly and openly, that I should, although he warned he was only a computer semi-literate. He wants to hear from and renew friendships and acquaintances with you. And, he will tell you expressively, he loves you.

Bests, and get to corresponding,

Bruce/Greg Temple (U-School '59)

Contact  me (Margaret Olson) for Mr Michael's address and phone number (I don't put that information here on the web page).
