In 1903, St Cyril, which later became IHM Academy,opened in Coeur d'Alene. The original buildings for the convent and school and dormitory were the old Fort Sherman hospital and opera house, moved in 1905 to Ninth & Indiana. [Remember the aerial walkway between the convent and school/dorm building?] Read two articles from the Coeur d'Alene Press in 1953, celebrating IHM's 50th anniversary. In 1922, the high school became the first accredited Catholic High School in Idaho. The modern school building was built c1957. IHM and St Thomas Grade School closed in 1971 when the IHM Sisters [based in Scranton PA] withdrew from all western operations because of dwindling numbers of sisters. In August 1996, The old St Thomas School building re-opened as Holy Family Catholic School, serving grades K-8 in the Idaho Panhandle, especially the parishes of St Thomas, St Pius X and St George [Post Falls]. phone 208-765-4327 to donate or support the school, which now serves over 200 children at a new site, 3005 Kathleen Avenue.
