1908-1979

The cornerstone for the first brick school building in Bixby was dedicated in November of 1908 (photo #1). The first day of class was April 12, 1909. The six room, two story building housed primary through senior high classes. However, there were no juniors or seniors for several years.

By 1915, the enrollment at the Bixby Public School was 240 students. An addition was built onto the building for offices and additional classes.

During the 1920-21 school year, a two story brick high school opened next door (photo #2). This building housed both junior and senior high. Graduating classes of 1928 and 1929 donated two walkway entry pillars at the high school. The class of 1931 donated two concrete benches for the front of the building.

The original brick building continued to house primary grades through sixth grade. It was demolished in 1937 to make way for a new grade school in 1937 (photo #3). The cornerstone was saved and now resides on the corner of Main and Fifth Streets near the original site of the building.

In 1954, the high school building was remodeled (photo #4). Originally, a gym, turned study hall/library, was located on the first floor with an auditorium above it on the second floor. The renovation replaced the lower floor space with an auditorium. A library occupied the space above it. Classrooms were updated. The main entry to the building was redesigned at that time. The building continued to house both junior and senior high classes until 1965.

A new building opened on Riverview Drive to house senior high classes in 1965. The old high school on Main Street continued to hold classes for junior high, later called middle school, until 1979 when the building was demolished to make room for Gray elementary school. At that time, middle school classes were moved to the intermediate school campus on 161st Street, south of the new high school campus.

All that remains of the high school are two pillars (photo #5), one bench (photo #6) and the memories of school days gone by at Bixby High School on Main Street.
