Birthday: Dec 29        Larry Gilbert, class of 1961, remembers Mr. Huffman and Mr. Johnson

Former student, Mary Gates Stevens, class of 1957, visits with Mr. Huffman during
ALUMNI WEEKEND 2003

Mr. Murl Huffman described his plans for the Alumni Weekend 2003:
"You asked about the alumni weekend. WOW

I'll have dinner at Bullwinkles with the Class of '53, then dash about 9 for Frisches a gathering of old timers at the old watering hole, and then on to the middle school where the Class of '59 is gathering from 7 to 12pm. It will be a wild evening.

Sat Shade Elementary celebrates its 50th from 12 to 4pm, and they're all set for a big bash - the whole ball of wax.

Then Sat night 6 to 12 the big alumni banquet and dance at Alex. there will be probably 300 there. We'll have a ball.

Then Sunday Class of 52 breakfast at the WC Masonic Lodge in downtown WC."

Bob Lovett, class of 1966, was 5 years younger than his cousin Larry Gilbert. Bob writes: Since you all seem to be reminiscing about Mr. Huffman then you will recall he had a project where you had to interview a political figure. His carrot for years was that anyone that interviewed the Governor automatically got an "A" in his class.

Well, the long and short of it is that Jim Miller and I crashed a speech given by then Governor Rhodes at a Dayton Daily News banquet. Security tried to throw us out but the Governor saw a good photo op and had his picture taken with us and then invited us into the dinner...front row, meal included!!

Our picture was on the front page of the Dayton Daily News the next morning. Jim and I were smiling ear to ear cause we knew no one else had ever done this. Unfortunately for me I had told the news reporter that we were doing this for Mr. "Mule" Huffman. He printed it and I don't think it went over too well.

Jim got an "A" in the class and I got an "A-" ???? I guess he was showing me he didn't like the name "Mule", yet I believe it was the earlier kids (Like in Larry's class) that actually gave him that nickname.

I always liked Mr. Huffman's class for the same reasons that has already been stated and I saw a few years later where he got "Ohio Teacher of the Year". I haven't verified this but if he did it was well desrved as any kid could tell he loved to teach and was good at it. I would grade him an "A-"

Ha Ha! Just kidding!
